Q: I am a student attending college and working part-time. Do I have to file a tax return?

Q: Is there and exemption from tax for full-time students?
A: Every U.S. citizen or resident must file a U.S. income tax return if certain income levels are reached. There is no exemption from tax for full-time students. If you are a full-time student, you may not be working full time. (IRS faq-kw221)

Q: What are the tax benefits for being a student?

Q: I did not receive a W-2 form from my employer, what do I do?
A: Your return will be incomplete without your W-2 and, therefore, cannot be filed. Please refer to IRS's instructions on what to do: Topic 154.

Q: Do you e-File and will it cost me anything?
A: We securely transmit all tax returns to the IRS through e-File and it is at no cost to you.

Q: About how long will it take to complete my tax return?
A: From 30 minutes to 2 hours. The time will vary depending on how many people come in to have their tax returns prepared. If you want to avoid long wait times, please come in during February or early March.

Q: Can I receive this assistance via phone or email?
A: No, the SDSU VITA Program currently does not have the capacity to assist taxpayers by phone or e-mail.

Q: Do I have to make an appointment to receive assistance?
A: Taxpayers will be assisted on a first-come/first-served basis. It tends to get busy during the months of March and April, so please try to come early.
